Hot Asian Stocks To Watch Right Now

Sometimes it easy to miss significant news when central bankers drone on about the economy. To be sure, the media carefully dissects official statements on monetary policy, parsing each sentence for subtle changes from previous announcements.

But lengthier remarks, such as speeches and testimonies, include numerous observations about the economy, not all of which lend themselves to glib headlines.

Indeed, as Sydney Morning Herald contributing editor Michael Pascoe recently observed, most of the news regarding Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Glenn Stevensspeech before the Econometric Society Australasian Meeting and the Australian Conference of Economists in early July focused on his remarks about jawboning. In fact, we covered that aspect ourselves.

But as Pascoe notes, Stevensspeech also contained a kernel of good news about the economy that went largely unnoticed amid all the commentaries about the exchange rate: Australia labor productivity is rising.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

To say that Zalicus Inc. (NASDAQ:ZLCS) has been all over the map of late is an understatement. From a low of $0.48 in late July to a high of $0.82 by early August to a low of $0.56 again by the middle of the month, ZLCS has been too erratic for most traders to take a swing it. As they say though, that was then and this is now. All the volatility kinks appear to have been worked out, and now that the dust has settled we can see new bullishness emerging.... and this time, it should last as while.

This is a logical deal for SKF on multiple fronts. For starters, Kaydon will meaningfully expand the company's U.S. presence - something it could have done on its own eventually, but certainly not without spending money. With that, there is the possibility of using Kaydon's existing U.S. footprint to sell more SKF products and further trouble rivals like RBC Bearings (ROLL) and ITT (ITT).

Advisors' Opinion:

JPMorgan’s Ryan Brinkman and team note that Delphi Automotive (DLPH) could be in the firing line. They explain:

We learned that Delphi is the supplier in question of the ignition switches [General Motors] is recalling on 1.6 mn affected vehicles. The ignition switch was produced by a predecessor entity to the current post-bankruptcy Delphi Automotive, potentially shielding the supplier from liability, but we nevertheless expect Delphi to incur costs to assist[General Motors] in fixing the affected vehicles, which we believe both[General Motors] and Delphi are committed to doing in as expeditious a manner as possible. Delphi management commented that a typical ignition switch is an inexpensive part, sometimes costing as little as $2 to $5 to produce (suggesting a total recall cost of ~$3.2 mn to $8.0 mn, ex-labor, or ~$0.01 to $0.02 of EPS), and that swapping the ignition for a new one is not labor intensive potentially done in only a few minutes. This contrasts with other recalls with which Delphi has been involved, which can sometimes necessitate replacement of a costlier component or one that is in a hard-to-reach area, such as deep within an engine, and was described as relatively straight-forward.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

As the U.S. automobile industry recovers, auto parts suppliers are expecting to see increasing sales volumes. Particularly firms such as Delphi Automotive (DLPH) and Stoneridge Inc. (SRI), which specialize in electronic components, expect to make large profits. Increasingly electrified vehicles, higher demand for hybrid and electric powertrain vehicles and stricter governmental emissions regulations should drive revenue growth for these firms in coming years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Don't let Campbell Soup's (CPB) household name fool you -- investors absolutely hate this stock. That hasn't exactly worked out so well in 2013: Year-to-date, shares of CPB have rallied more than 37%.

That means that short sellers have been getting shellacked all year even if Campbell's short interest still stands at more than 13 this summer. That glut of beaten-down short sellers makes CPB a stellar short squeeze candidate right now.

Soup isn't Campbell's only business. The firm may be the largest soup maker the world, but it also owns food brands such as Pace, Swanson and Pepperidge Farm. The firm just announced a big move in selling its European soups, sauces and simple meals to private equity firm CVC Partners -- the deal should free up significant cash for CPB to return to shareholders without touching the U.S. segment that makes up more than 70% of sales.

While Campbell's 2013 rally has reduced its dividend yield right now, the firm's current 2.42% yield still qualifies as "high" in this extremely low interest rate environment. With earnings slated at the end of the month and the pricing details of the European deal with CVC yet to be announced, there's a lot of headline risk in being short Campbell right now. Watch out for a squeeze.

Tyson Foods (TSN) gained 4.6% to $30.78 a day after beating earnings forecasts, while Boston Scientific (BSX) after one of its medical devices was approved by European regulators.

The biggest underperformer on the Dow is Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) , which is a hair above breakeven. The Supreme Court ruled that the Federal Trade Commission could sue pharmaceutical companies' reverse payment settlements on antitrust grounds. Reverse payments were payments made by drug developers to convince generic-drug makers to delay launching generic replacements for blockbuster drugs. If the government sues on these grounds, it could help open up generic drugs to consumers earlier in the product cycle, which would in turn negatively impact Merck's profits.
